ACCOMMODATIONS LANGKAWI 5

For a fun day trip I recommend taking one of the local boat trips to some of Langkawi's other islands. Most diving trips take you out to Payar Marine Park for two dives per day. Off Payar Island, a floating platform drifts above a stunning coral reef, where dive operators and snorkel gear rentals are available (there's also a glass-bottom boat if you don't want to get wet). Day trips to other surrounding islands such as Pulau Singa Bcsar, Pulau Langgun, Pulau Rebak, or Pulau Betas Basah give you a day of peaceful sun-soaking and swimming. The full day trip to Payar Island floating reef plat fonn costs RM170 (US$45), but dives and rental of snorkel gear cost extra. If you want to hop around to nice secluded island beaches, the half-day island hopping tour costs RM45 (US$12). The half-day round-island tour also stops at a few attractions, including the Batik Art Village (RM30/US$7.90). In Langkawi call Asian Overland at ,04/955-2002, or talk to your hotel tour desk operator.
Perhaps one of the loveliest additions to Langkawi's attractions is the Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation, Pasir Tengkorak, Jalan Datai (04/959-4669). The artistic devotion of the foundation's namesake fueled the creation of this enchanting modern space designed to showcase Malaysia's contribution to the international fine-arts scene. If you can pull yourself from the beach for any one activity in Langkawi, this is the one I recommend. Mr. Hussein has created a museum worthy of international attention. Truly a gem. It's open daily from l0am to 5pm; adults RM7 (US$1.85), children free.
Langkawi's designated Duty Free Port status makes shopping here quite fun and very popular. In Kuah town, the Sime Darby Duty Free Shop, Langkawi Duty Free, 64 Persiaran Putra, Pekan Kuah (04/966-6052), carries the largest selection.
