AROUND SINGAPORE 3

Taxis are a very convenient and affordable way to get around Singapore, and there's every chance you'll get a good conversation with the driver into the bargain. Despite this, I advise against relying Completely on taxicabs, since Singapore's excellent public transportation system will take you practically anywhere you need to go for a fraction of the price. Even in the middle of nowhere there's always a bus route to take you to familiar territory-just remember to keep your TransitLink Guide (see above) handy, so you'll know where the bus you're about to hop is headed.
In town, a11 of the shopping malls, hotels, and major buildings have taxi queues, which you're expected to use. During lunch hours and the evening rush, the queues can be very long; though by and large taxis are convenient, don't count on finding one fast during the evening rush hours between Spm and 7pm. Especially if it's raining, you'll be waiting for an hour, easy. Everybody wants a cab at this time, and for some strange reason this is the time the cabbies choose to change shifts, Brilliant. During this time, I recommend you call to book a taxi pickup, but even that may mean up to a half-hour wait. You pay a little extra, but believe me, some days it can really be worth it.

Most destinations in the main parts of the island can be reached fairly inexpensively, while trips to the outlying attractions can cost from S$10 to S$15 (US$5.70-US$8.55) one-way. If you're at an attraction or restaurant outside of the central part of the city where it is more difficult to hail a cab on the street, you can ask the cashier or service counter attendant to call a taxi for you. The extra charge for pickup is between S$3 and S$3.20 (US$1.70-US$1.85) depending on the cab company (CityCab is the cheapest). Call these main cab companies for bookings: CityCab 651G552-2222), Comfort ( 651 6552-1111), and TIBS ( 65165528888),CityCab and Comfort charge the metered fare, which is S$2.40 (US$1.35) for the first kilometer and S10¢ (US6¢) for each additional 225m to 240m or 30 seconds of waiting. TIBS's meter starts at S$2.10 (US$1.20).
