One of the few good reasons to rent a car is if you plan to drive into Malaysia. Back in the 1970s, driving in Malaysia was risky because of highway bandits. These days, though, it's relatively safe traveling, and thanks to the new toll road-the North-South Highway from Singapore all the way up to the Thai border-it's pretty convenient (see singapore & malaysia websection 9 for more on this subject, and on renting a car in Malaysia rather than Singapore, which can save you some cash).

Two good places to seek out a rental car are:
• Avis: Changi Airport Terminal 2 06 65/6542-8855), #01-01 Concorde Shopping Centre 65/ 6737-1668). You must be at least 23 years old to rent, and the minimum rental period is 24 hours. Rates in Singapore run daily from S$100 (US$57) for a Mitsubishi Lancer to S$160 (US$91) for a Mitsubishi Gallant. For travel to Malaysia, the daily rates are somewhat higher One-way rentals are available, with varying drop-off fees for Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan> Alor Setar, Ipoh, and Penang. All major credit cards are accepted.
• Hertz: Changi Airport Terminal 2, Arrival Meeting Hall South G6 65/542-5300), or 125 Tanglin Rd., Tudor Court Shopping Gallery ( 1800/734-4646). You must be at least 21 years of age to rent and the minimum rental period is 24 hours. Daily rates for rental within Singapore run from S$199 (US$119) for a Mitsubishi Lancer to S$559 (US$335) for a BMW or Mercedes Benz, and S$1,194 (US$715) to S$3>354 (US$2,008) per week, respectively. Hertz does not rent luxury cars for driving to Malaysia. For Malaysia driving, Hertz will charge an extra S$25 (US$15) per day. For one-way trips to Malaysia there are varying drop-off charges for Johor Bahru> Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan, and Penang. Hertz accepts all major credit cards. An additional solution to getting around is to hire a car and driver. A CityCab Mercedes can be hired for S$39 per hour, which is about the best rate available. For bookings call 65/ G454-2222.
