ATTRACTIONS

Most of Kuala Lumpur's historic sights are located in the area around Merdeka Square/Jalan Hishamuddin area, while many of the gardens, parks, and museums are out at hake Gardens. Taxi fare between the two areas will run you about RM5 (US$1.30).

Central Market *The original Central Market, built in 1936, used to be a wet market, but the place is now a cultural center (air-conditioned!) for local artists and craftspeople selling antiques, crafts, and curios. It is a fantastic place for buying Malaysian crafts and souvenirs, with two floors of shops to chose from. The Central Market also stages evening performances (7:45pm on weekends) of Malay martial arts, Indian classical dance, or Chinese orchestra. Call the number above for performance information. Islamic Art Museum The seat of Islamic learning in Kuala Lumpur, the center has displays of Islamic texts, artifacts, porcelain, and weaponry. Jalan Perdana. 0312274-2020. Admission RM8 (US$2.10). Tues-Sun 10am-6pm.

Istana Negara Closed to the public, this is the official residence of the king. You can peek through the gates at the istana (palace) and its lovely grounds. Jalan Negara. No phone.
Jame Mosque (Masjid Jame)The first settlers landed in Kuala Lumpur at the spot where the Gombak and Klang rivers meet, and in 1909 a mosque was built here. Styled after an Indian Muslim design, it is one of the oldest mosques in the city. Jalan Tun Terak. No phone.
