ATTRACTIONS KINABALU

Basically, here in Sabah there's enough to keep you busy for about 6 months solid. Every time 1 leave, I have a list of about 50 million things I'm dying to do when I return. We'll start with scuba diving. Off the eastern coast of Sabah lies the tiny island of Sipadan *** If you're a real scuba fanatic, then you already know about it. It is, after all, one of the top-five dive sites in the world. This giant coral "garden" just can't be beat by any other site in Southeast Asia. Many outfits in Kota Kinabalu organize short-term and long-term stays out at the dive site, but Borneo Action ***, C119 Ground Floor, Wisma Sabah (and fax O88/246701) in my opinion, is the most exciting and professionally run. They'll take you out for trips either on a live-aboard boat or with night stays at one of the resorts on Sipadan island, and will arrange all transportation and dives.

Their special 7-day/6-night live-aboard trip includes not only Sipadan sites but trips all around the region to places other divers don't go. One note about reservations: You're better off booking a Sipadan trip through this local agency rather than through an agent at home. Regulations allow only 750 guests on the island each night, and overseas agents constantly overbook. The local firms make sure there's space available before booking.

For shorter trips, Layang Layang, while not as incredible as Sipadan, also has some great diving. Borneo Action can take you on this trip as well. Contact them at the address above. For snorkeling and beach activities, pick up a boat at the Sabah Carks Jetty just behind the Hyatt to take you out to nearby Tunka Abdul Rahman Park. Only 8km (12 3/4 miles) from Kota Kinabalu, you can head out for RM10 (US$2.60) round-trip, and spend the day on one of the park's five islands, snorkeling and swimming (you can rent snorkel gear once you're there). Accommodations are available on Pulau Manukan and Pulau Mumutik, and can be booked in advance through any of the tour operators in Sabah.
