ATTRACTIONS KINABALU 3
If you prefer a softer
adventure, talk to the people at Discovery Tours,
Lot G 22, 433-435 Wisma Sabah (088/221-244; fax 088/221-600),
with another office at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort
(Z 088/216-26). They take groups on either 2-day/1-night
or 3-day/2-night trips to hike Mt. Kinabalu (RM380/
US$99 and RM540/US$140 per person, respectively).
They also plan regular trips out to Sandakan, on the
eastern coast of Sabah, for 2-day/1-night trips to
see the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center,
the largest orangutan sanctuary in the world, and
take a boat trip to see probiscus monkeys and swallows
nest caves (RM556/US$l45 per person). Or, for about
the same price, you can see the orangutan center with
a stop at the Marine Turtle Conservation Park and
Hatchery.
River rafting
is also a popular sport here, especially along the
Kiulu River, which is an exciting trip for all levels
of experience and fitness. A day trip can be arranged
through Discovery Tours and costs only RM150 (US$39)
per person. Keep in mind, the best time for rafting
in Sabah is between March and September.
Finally, the indigenous
peoples of Sabah are happy to welcome visitors to
their villages to witness their daily lives and traditions.
Discovery Tours offers coach trips to see the Runggus,
Bajau, and other tribes in the Kota Kinabalu area.
Halfday and day trips cost between RMGO and RM250
(US$ I G-US$G5) per person.
