ATTRACTIONS KOTA BHARU 2

For great local handicrafts shopping, visitors to Kelantan need go no further than Jalan PC.B., the road that leads to PC.B. beach from Kota Bharu's Chinatown area. Hire a taxi and stop at every roadside factory, showroom, shop, And crafts house (the place crawls with them!) and you'll satisfy every shopping itch that needs scratching. Some wonderful places to try are Wisma Songket Kampung Penambang, Jalan PC.B. (09/744-7757), for songket cloth and dothing, and to see the ladies weaving the fine cloth. The local kite man, Haji Wan Hussen bin Haji Ibrahim, makes and sells kites out of his home at 328a Kampong Redong Tikat, Jalan PC.B. (09/744-0462), and will invite you in for a look. He'll pack them sturdily so you can airmail them home. Also, Pantas Songet & Batik Manufacturer, Kampung Penambang, Jalan PC.B. (09/744-1616), has a nice selection of batik clothing and sarongs, plus some pieces of songket cloth.

In town, if you'd like to buy some silver, good (and inexpensive) filigree jewelry collections and silver housewares are to be had at Mohamed Salleh & Sons, 1260B Jalan Sultanah Zainab (09/748-3401), and K. B. Permai, 5406-C: Jalan Sultanah Zainab (09/748-5661). In the small but lively Chinatown area look for A. Zahari Antik, 3953-B Jalan Kebin Sultan (09/744-3548), vahere you can shop for old treasures like keris (Malay daggers with wavy blades, of which this place has a great selection) as well as pottery, carvings, and brass. Finally for a little local shopping experience, check out the giant Pasar Besar wet market on Jalan Parit Dalam. Behind the produce and fish stands are shops for cheap bargains.
