Serawak Museum * Two branches, one old and one new, display exhibits of the natural history, indigenous peoples, and culture of Sarawak, plus the state's colonial and modern history The two branches are connected by an overhead walkway above Jalan Tun Haji Openg. The wildlife exhibit is a bit musty, but the arts and artifacts in the other sections are well tended. A tiny aquarium sits neglected behind the old branch, but the gardens here are lovely.
Square Tower The tower, built in 1879, served as a prison camp, but today the waterfront real estate is better served by a tourist information center. The Square tower is also a prime starting place for a stroll along the riverside, and is where you'll also find out about cultural performances and exhibitions held at the waterfront, or call the number above for performance schedules.Tua Pek Kong Temple At a main crossroads near the river stands the oldest Chinese temple in Sarawak. While officially it is dated at 1876, most locals acknowledge the true date of its beginnings as 1843. It's still lively in form and spirit, with colorful dragons tumbling along the walls and incense filling the air. Junction of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Padungan.
When you come to Sarawak, everyone will tell you that you must take a trip to witness life in a longhouse. It is perhaps one of the most unique experiences you'll have, and is a lot easier to arrange than it sounds. Many good tour operators in Kuching take visitors out to longhouse communities, where guests are invited to stay for one or more nights. You'll eat local food, experience daily culture, and view traditional pastimes and ceremonies. On longer tours you may stop at more than one village to get a cross-cultural comparison of two or more different tribes.
