Johor Bahru, the capital of the state of Johor, is at the southern tip of the Malaysia peninsula, where Malaysia's north-south highway comes to its southtern terninus. Since its just over the causeway from Singapore, a very short jump by car, bus, or train, it's a popular point of entry to Malaysia. Job “JB” is not the most fascinating destination in Malaysia, but for a quick day visit from Singapore or as a stopover en route to other Malaysia destinations, it offers some good shopping, sightseeing, and dining.
Johor’s early beginnings were very closely entwined with nearby Malacca's. a The Portuguese and Dutch, who each had their eye on the successful city-port, Johor as a stepping-stone-the Portuguese pummeled the place to get to Malacca in 1511, and in 1641 the Dutch formed a strategic alliance with Johor to overthrow the Portuguese. In an ironic twist, Malacca's success did not continue under the Portuguese or the Dutch. In fact, by the 1700s, favorable rights right upon Johor turned the state into a powerful threat to Malacca's trade. Eventuallythe envious Dutch attacked Johor, driving its leaders to establish a capital on the island of Riau, just south of the peninsula.
