ETIQUETTE TIPS 2

A traditional Indian greeting is a slight bow with your palms pressed together in front of your chest. In these modern times, though, a handshake will usually do. When greeting an older man or especially a woman, wait for a gesture, then follow suit.

The traditional Malay greeting, called the salaam, is still practiced in Malaysia, but is rarely seen in Singapore. In this practice, both parties extend their hands to lightly touch each others', then touch their hearts with their fingertips. This is only done between members of the same sex. While Malay men will offer the more common handshake, always remember that Muslim women are not allowed to touch men to whom they are not related by blood or marriage. A simple smile and nod is fine.

Ladies, if seated on the floor, should never sit with their legs crossed in front of them-instead, always tuck your legs to the side. Both men and women should also be careful not to show the bottoms of their feet. If you cross your legs while on the floor or in a chair, don't point your soles toward other people-it's very rude. Also be careful not to use your foot to point or gesture, as this is also insulting.
