GETTING AROUND MALAYSIA

BY TAXI Taxis are abundant, but be warned they do not use meters, so you must agree on the price before you ride. Most trips within the city are between RM3 and RM6. (f you're staying out at the Batu Feringgi beach resort area, expect taxis to town to run RM20 (US$5.25); RM30 (US$7.90) at night. The ride is about 15 or 20 minutes, but can take 30 minutes during rush hour.

BY BUS Buses also run all over the island, and are well used by tourists, who don't want to spring RM20 every time they want to go to the beach. The most popular route is the Hin Bus Co. (Blue Bus) no. 93, which operates every 10 minutes between Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in Georgetown and the beach resorts at Batu Feringgi. It makes stops at KOMTAR Shopping Plaza and also at the ferry terminal. Fare is RM1 (US254). Give your money to the nice ticket person on board.

CAR RENTAL Hertz has an office in Georgetown at 38 Farquhar St. (04/ 263-5914).

BY BICYCLE & MOTORCYCLE Along Batu Feringgi there are bicycles and motorcycles available for rent.

BY TRISHAW In Georgetown it's possible to find some trishaw action for about RM20 (US$3.95) an hour. Its fun and I recommend it for traveling between sights, at least for an hour or two.
