GETTING AROUND MALAYSIA 2

ON FOOT I think everyone should walk at least part of the time to see the sights of Georgetown, because in between each landmark and exhibit there's so much more to see. A taxi, even a trishaw, will whisk you right by back alleys where elderly haircutters set up alfresco shops, bicycle repairmen sit fixing tubes in front of their stores, and Chinese grannies fan themselves in the shade. The streets of Georgetown are stimulating, with the sights of old trades still being plied on these living streets, the noise of everyday life, and the exotic smells of' an old Southeast Asian port. Give yourself at least a day here.

American Express has an office in Georgetown at Mayflower Acme Tours, 10th floor, Unit 10-05 MWE Plaza, No. 8 Lebuh Farquhar (04/262-8196). The banking center of Georgetown is in the downtown area (close to Ft. Cornwallis) on Leboh Pantai, Leboh Union and Leboh Downing. For Internet service in town, try STC Net Café 21 Chulia St. (04/264-3378), which charges RM6 (US$ 1.C0) per hour. Out on Batu Feringgi head for Cyber By the Beach, Golden Sands Resort 4) 04/881-2096), with fees of RM5 (US$1.30) per hour.

The main post office in Georgetown is on L.eboh Downing (04/2G19222). Another convenient location is out on Jalan Batu Feringgi (04/ 881-2555).
While Georgetown has many hotels right in the city for convenient sightseeing, many visitors choose to stay at one of the beach resorts 30 minutes away at Batu Feringgi. Trips back and forth can be a bother (regardless of the resorts' free shuttle services), but if you're not staying in a resort, most of the finer beaches are off-limits.
