GETTING THERE

BY AIR From KL, Malaysia Airlines (1300/88-3000) flies twice daily. You'll land at Kota Bharu's Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (09/773-7000), about 20 minutes outside the city. A taxi to town shouldn't be any more than RM25 (US$6.60).

BY TRAIN The KTM runs a line through the center of the peninsula all the way to the Thai border. The Wakaf Bharu station is closest to the city, and taxis are available, or you can take local bus no. 19 or 27. For train information in KL call (03/2730-2000).

BY BUS Kota Bharu's bus terminal is at Jalan Padang Garong off Jalan Doktor. Buses bring you here from all corners of the peninsula. From KL call Transnasional at Puduraya Bus Terminal (03/230-3300). They've got two dailies at a cost of RM22 (US$5.80). To find out about buses out of Kota Bharu call 09/747-4330. The taxi stand is just across the street, and you may be hounded by all sorts of gypsy cabs, people with cars who are not proper taxi drivers but who will take you places to make some extra cash. They're basically honest Joes trying to make a buck.

BYTAXI The local taxi stand across from the bus terminal also acts as the outstation taxi stand. To reserve a car the number is 09/748-1386. Taxis from Kuala Terengganu run about RM80 (US$21). One thing I like about Kota Bharu is how most of the major museums are ',,(died in one central area, so walking to them is very easy. For the beach and located industry areas you'll need to hire a taxi. The main taxi stand is at Jalan Padang Garong; call 09/748-1386 for booking. Daily and half-day rates can be negotiated for about RM15 (US$3.95) per hour. Trips around town will between RM5 and RM10 (US$1.30-US$2.65).
