GETTING THERE MALAYSIA

Malaysia has five international 11rports-at Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching-and 14 domestic airports atlocations that include Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuantan, and Kuala Terengganu. Specific airport information is listed with coverage of each city. A passenger service charge, or airport departure tax, is levied on all flights. A tax of RM6 (US$1.58) for domestic flights and RM45 (US$12) for international flights is usually included when you pay for your ticket.

Few Western carriers fly directly to Malaysia.If Malaysian Airlines does not have suitable routes directly from your home country, you'll have to contact another airline to work out a route that connects to one of Malaysia Airline's routes. I have found Malaysia Airlines service to be of a very good standard, not to mention they have possibly the lowest rates to Southeast Asia from North American destinations.

FROM THE UNITED STATES Malaysia Airlines ( 800/5529264) flies at least once daily from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur, and three times a week from New York. FROM CANADA North American carriers will have to connect with a Malaysian Airlines flight, either in East Asia or in Europe. FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM Malaysia Airlines (0171/3412020) has two daily nonstop flights from London Heathrow airport, operating domestic connections from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Teesside, Leeds Bradford, and Manchester. British Airways ( 0345/222111, a local call from anywhere within the U.K.) departs London to KL daily, except on Mondays and Fridays.

FROM AUSTRALIA Malaysia Airlines (02/132627) flies directly to Kuala Lumpur from Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne, and Cairns. Quantas Airlines (02/131211) provides service from Sydney to Kt. on 'Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. FROM NEW ZEALAND Malaysia Airlines (09/373-2741 or 0800/657-472) flies a direct route from Auckland.
