GETTING THERE MALAYSIA 3

From Singapore, there are many bus routes to Malaysia. The easiest depart from the Johor-Singapore bus terminal at the corner of Queen and Arab streets. Buses to Kuala Lumpur leave three times daily and cost S$25. Contact The Singapore-KL bus service at 65/6292-8254. Buses to Johor Bahru and Malacca can also be picked up at this terminal, leaving at regular intervals throughout the day. Call 65/6292-8149 for buses to Johor Bahru (s$2.1o/us$1.2o)) and 65/ 293-5915 for buses to Malacca (S$11/US$6.30). If you wish to travel by bus to a smaller destination, the best way is to hop a bus to Johor Bahru and then transfer to a bus to your final stop.

By the way, it is possible to take local SBS bus service #170 between Singapore and Johor Bahru, which is the cheapest way to go, but really I don't recommend it. During peak travel hours I've seen the bus queues snaking for miles at the immigration checkpoints and thought, "Thank God I'm not those guys."

From Thailand, you can grab a bus in either Bangkok or Hat Yai (in the southern part of the country) heading for Malaysia. I don't recommend the bus trip from Bangkok. It's just far too long a journey to be confined to a bus. You're better off taking the train. From Hat Yai, many buses leave regularly to northern Malaysian destinations, particularly Butterworth (Penang).

BY TAXI (FROM SINGAPORE) From the Johor-Singapore bus terminal at Queen and Arab streets, the Singapore Johor Taxi Operators Association (65/6296-7054) can drive you to Johor Bahru for S$28 (US$16) if you get to the terminal yourself, or S$40 (US$23) if you ask to be picked up at your hotel.
For convenience, driving to Malaysia from Singapore can't be beat. You can go where you want to go, when you want to go, and without the hassle of public transportation-but it is quite expensive. Cars can be rented in Singapore (see singapore & malaysia websection 2 for details), then driven to and even dropped off in Malaysia. A slightly cheaper option is taking the ferry from Singapore to Johor and renting there.
