HISTORIC DISTRICT ATTRACTIONS 2

The oldest portion is the part nearest Parliament House; it was designed by colonial engineer J. F. A. McNair and built by convict labor between June 1864 and December 1867. Four major additions and other renovations have been faithful to his original design. Inside, there are many surviving details, including plaster moldings, cornices, and architraves. It is currently being renovated as the second phase of the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Fort Canning Park These days, Fort Canning Park is known for great views out over Singapore, but in days past it served as the site of Raffles's home and the island's first botanical garden. Its history goes back even farther, though: Excavations over the years have unearthed ancient brick foundations and artifacts that gave a certain credence to the island natives' belief that their royal ancestors lived and were buried on the site. Fourteenth-century Javanese gold ornaments were excavated and placed on display at the Singapore History Museum. Atop the hill, a mysterious keramat, or sacred grave, marks the burial site of Iskander Shah (also known as Parameswara), the Palembang ruler who came to Singapore in the late 1300s before settling in Malacca. The debate surrounding the truth of this account doesn't hinder those who come to pay homage and worship at the site, which is well maintained within the park.
