Rendezvous MALAY/INDONESIAN I was sad when, after a few months away from Singapore, I couldn't find Rendezvous at its previous location in RafIles City Shopping Center, only to learn it had shifted to a nicer space at the new (coincidentally named?) Rendezvous Hotel. Line up to select from a large numher of Malay dishes, cafeteria style, like sambal squid in a spicy sauce of chile and shrimp paste, and beef rendang, in a dark spicy curry gravy. The waitstaff will hring your order to your table. The coffee shop setting is as far from glamorous is the last Rendezvous, but on the wall black-and-white photos trace the restaurant's history back to its opening in the early 'SOs. It's a great place to experiment with a new cuisine.

#02-02 Hotel Rendezvous, 9 Bras Basah Rd. , 651339-7508. Reservations not necessary. Meat dishes sold per piece S$3-S$5 (US$1.70-US$2.85). AE, DC, MC, V Daily i tam-9pm. Closed on public holidays.

Sketches Value ITALIAN Pasta is always an easy and agreeable choice, and <ometimes when you're traveling, familiar tastes can be welcome from time to time. Not only is this place fast, inexpensive, and good, its also pretty unique. F he concept is "Design-a-Pasta," where they give you a menu on which is a scries of boxes you check off one set for pasta type; one set for sauce type; .mother for add-ins like meats, mushrooms, and garlic; and boxes for chile, Parmesan, and pine nuts. The kitchen is in the center of the restaurant, with bar ,eating all around. This is the best place to be if you want to watch those cooks hustle through menu card after menu card-it's a great show. You can also sit at one of the tables in the restaurant or out on the patio inside the shopping mall, lhut then you'd miss the fun of eating here.
