JAZZ BARS 2

Raffles Bar & Billiards Talk about a place rich with the kind of elegance only history can provide. Raffles Bar & Billiards began as a bar in 1896 and over the decades has been transformed to perform various functions as the hotel's needs dictated. In its early days, legend has it that a patron shot the last tiger in Singapore under a pool table here. Whether or not the tiger part is true, one of its two billiards tables is an original piece, still in use after 100 years. In fact, many of the fixtures and furniture here are original Raffles antiques, including the lights above the billiards tables and the scoreboards, and are marked with small brass placards. In the evenings, a jazzy little trio shakes the ghosts out of the rafters, while from 6pm to lam nightly people lounge around enjoying single malts, cognacs, coffee, port, Champagne, chocolates, and imported cigars. Expect to drop a small fortune. Open daily 11:30am-12:30am. Raffles Hotel, 1 Beach Rd. 65/6331-1746.

Somerset's Bar This huge hotel lounge can accommodate large crowds very comfortably. Good thing, as the place serves quite a lot of patrons, mostly jazz lovers who come for the best live jazz in the city. They feature at least two sets of live music every night: country, pop, and rock from 6:15 to 8:15pm except Saturday, and a jazz set from 9pm to around 1 am every night. From time to time they've hosted internationally renowned performers like bassist Eldee Young, pianist Judy Roberts, and vocalist Nancy Kelly. Call ahead to find out their schedule of performances, and plan some time here for a nice evening in their relaxing environment. Open daily 5pm-2am. Happy hour 5-8:30pm daily. The Westin Stamford and Westin Plaza hotels, 2 Stamford Rd. 65/6431-5332.
