KOTA KINABALU
The best place to begin exploring Sabah's marine wonders, wildlife and forests, adventure opportunities, and indigenous peoples is from its capital, Kota Kinabalu. A speck of a city on the west coast, its where you'll find the headquarters for all of Sabah's adventure tour operators and package excursion planners. I recommend you spend at least a day here to explore all your options, then set out to the wilds for the adventure o( a lifetime.
VISITOR INFORMATION The best information here can be gotten at the Sabah Tourism Promotion Corporation, operated by the state government, at 51 Jalan Gaya (088/212-121). While the national MTB has a small office on Jalan Gaya a block down from the Sabah Tourism office, almost all of their information promotes travel in other parts of the country. Still, if you're interested, stop by Ground Floor Bangunan EON, CMG Life, No 1 Jalan Sagunting (088/242-064).
GETTING THERE Because of Sabah's remote location, just about everybody will arrive by air via the Kota Kinabalu International Airport in the capital city (088/238-555), about a 20-minute drive south of the central part of the ciry. Malaysia Airlines makes the flight from KL at least five times daily. For reservations information in KL, call the airlines at 1300/88-3000, or in Kota Kinabalu visit their office at 10th floor, Block C, Kompleks Karamunsing (088/213-555).
