While you can stroll around the downtown areas with ease, getting to many of the bigger attractions will require a taxi. To call and arrange for a taxi, dial CJ 09/G22-1581, or arrange through your hotel concierge. It's a good idea to hire these guys for a half or whole day, so you can go around to places and not worry how you'll get back. Rates will be around RM15 (US$3.95) per hour.

Most banks are on Ja1an Sultan Ismail. The main post office is on Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin (09/622-7555), next to the Tourist Information Centre.

The Aryani Resort ** Finds Two and a half years ago, Raja Dato' Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad (a most royal name) opened his dream resort. An internationally celebrated architect, he'd previously designed the State Museum (see below) and wished to translate the beautiful lines of Terengganu style into a special resort. The resulting Aryani is stunning-organic, stimulating, unique, best of all, peaceful. In a rural 3.6-hectare (9-acre) spot by the sea, the rooms private bungalows situated like a village. Inside, each is masterfully decorated uir both traditional style and modern comfort. The Heritage Suite wins the prize: a 7 00-year-old timber palace, restored and rebuilt on the site, it's p6nted with fine antiques. The design of the outdoor pool is practically an optical illusion, and the spa (for massage and beauty treatments) is in its own Malay house. The resort's rural location has both a plus and a minus: On the j, side it's secluded; on the minus side it's 45 minutes from Kuala Terengganu. The resort can arrange boat trips, tours to town, and golfing.

Primula Parkroyal Kuala Terengganu A top pick for accommodations in Kuala Terengganu is the Parkroyal. The first resort to open in this area, it command the best section of beach the city has to offer and still is very close to the downtown area. It has full resort facilities, which include three excellent restaurans and the only bar in the city (perhaps even in the state). Make sure you get 1mm facing the sea-the view is dreamy. Other facilities include an outdoor ,d with grassy lawn, water-sports facilities, a lobby shop, and a kid's club.
