Because Kuantan is such a small town, some travelers coming through these parts choose to stay 47km (28 miles) north in Cherating. This area supports a few international-class resorts along the beautiful beachfront of the South China Sea. Funny thing: Compared to Kuantan, the town of Cherating has even fewer things to do, and guests tend not to stray too far from their resort. Self contained units, they each offer a few dining choices, arrange all the water-sports facilities and outdoor activities you have time for, and can even provide transport to and from Kuantan if you need to see a little "big city life.

" Windsurfers take note: (berating is world famous for excellent conditions, and the home of a few international competitions and exhibitions. Resorts can also arrange trips through the mangroves up the Cherating River in a hired bumboat, and trips to crafts shops and cultural shows. A little more than 11 km (6 ¾ miles) north of Cherating is Chendor Beach, one of the peninsula's special beaches where giant leatherback turtles lay their eggs from May to October.
