KUCHING

The perfect introduction to Sarawak begins in its capital. Kuching's museums, cultural exhibits, and historical attractions will help you form an overview of the history, people, and natural wonders of the state. In Kuching your introduction to Sarawak will be comfortable and fun; culture by day and good food and fun by night. Kuching, meaning "cat" in Malay, also has a wonderful sense of humor, featuring monuments and exhibits to its feline mascot on almost every corner.

VISITOR INFORMATION The Sarawak Tourism Board's Visitor Information Centre has literature and staff that can answer any question about activities in the state and city. This is actually the best place to start planning any trips to Sarawak's wonderful national parks, as the main office for the parks board operates from here. Really, they're just incredibly informed and are so welcoming, so feel free to take advantage. You'll find them at the Padang Merdeka next to the Sarawak Museum (082/423-600).

GETTING THERE Almost all travelers to Sarawak enter via Kuching International Airport, just outside the city. Malaysia Airlines (1300/88-3000) flies here about 10 times daily from KL. In addition, there are nonstop flights from the Malaysian cities of Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia Airlines also connects Kuching with direct flights from Singapore, Bandar Seri Bagawan in Brunei, Hong Kong, and Manila. The number for Malaysia Airlines in Kuching is 082/246-622. For airport information call 082/454-255.
