BLU *** CALIFORNIA The top floor of the Shangri-La commands a lovely view of Orchard Road and the gardens of the most fashionable residential district in the city. BLU is Singapore's cutting edge in stylish dining, decorated with modern glass sculpture by Danny Lane, table lamps by Philippe Starck, and Wedgewood table settings. The Maine lobster paclla with saffron, black mussel, and lobster chorizo jus is mind blowing. Even your plain old chicken is sumptuously flavored with apricots, foie gras and Swiss chard. The wine list here is excellent. After hours BLU turns into an atmospheric lounge with live jazz Monday to Thursday till 12:45am; Friday and Saturday til 1:45am. BI.U is my pick for the hottest date venue.

Chang Jiang * CHINESE SHANGHAINESE The small and elegant Chang Jiang is a unique blend Chinese food and European style. A fine setting, which rnixcs mfmed Continental ambience with Chinese accents, has a view of the Courtyard and pool of the historic Goodwood Park Hotel through its large draped picture windows. The food is Chinese, but the service is French Gueridon style, in which dishes are presented to diners and taken to a side table to be portioncd into individual servings. Some dishes are prepared while you watch, especially coffee, which is a veritable chemistry showcase. A couple of the more sumptuous dishes are the tangy and crunchy crisp eel wuxi and the sweet batter-dipped prawns with sesame seed and salad sauce. If you order the Beijing duck, after the traditional pancake dish they serve the shredded meat in a delicious saucc with green bean noodles.
