LITTLE INDIA II
Abdul Gafoor Mosque is currently undergoing a major restoration. The grounds might be still boarded off if work has not been completed yet. It's actually a mosque complex consisting of the original mosque, a row of shophouses facing Dunlop Street, a prayer hall, and another row of houses ornamented with crescent moons and stars, facing the mosque. The original mosque was called Masjid Al-Abrar, and is commemorated on a granite plaque above what could have been either the entrance gate or the mosque itself. It still stands, and even though it is badly dilapidated, retains some of its original beauty. One beautiful detail is the sunburst above the main entrance, its rays decorated with Arabic calligraphy.
The surrounding shophouses were built in 1887 and 1)03 by Sheik Abdul Gafoor, and their income paid for the start of the new mosque on the site 7 years later. Gafoor passed away before the mosque's completion, and although he'd willed the entire complex to his son, the latter's mismanagement of the affair led the government to pass control to the Mohammeden Endowments Board, who saw the mosque to completion in 1927.
Restoration of the shophouses is underway, including transformation of the facing shophouses into a religious school.
