MALACCA 4
Most of the historic sights around the town square are well within walking distance. For other trips taxis are the most convenient way around, but are at times difficult to find. They're also not as clearly marked as in KL or Johor Bahru. They are also not metered, so be prepared to bargain. Basically, no matter what you do, you'll always be charged a higher rate than a local. Tourists are almost ways quoted at RM10 (US$2.65) for local trips. Malaysians pay RM5 S$1.30). If you're feeling sporty, you can bargain for a price somewhere in between. Trips to Ayer Keroh will cost about RM20 (US$5.25).
Trishaws (bicycle rickshaw) are all over the historic areas of town, and in 1.!lacca they're renowned for being very, very garishly decorated (which adds to ii, fun!). Negotiate for hourly rates of about RM20 (US$5.25) for two people.
Major banks are located in the historic center of town, with a couple along Jalan Putra. The most convenient post office location is on Jalan Lakshamana (06/ '84-8440). For centrally located Internet, try Internet Booth Cafe, No. 3A Jalan Kota Lakshamana (06/281-3266).
Malacca is not very large, and most of the places to stay are well within walking !i,tance of attractions, shopping, and restaurants.
