Placa Hotel situated just across from the Arab Street and Kampong Glam areas, you're a little off the beaten track at the Plaza Hotel-you'll need to take buses or taxis just about everywhere-but the trade-off is that if you stick around you can take advantage of the gorgeous and luxurious recreation and relaxation facilities, which include a half-size Olympic pool with a diving board (a rarity in Singapore), a dreamy sun deck decorated in a lazy-days Balinese-style tropical motif, and a Bali-themed poolside cafe, cooled by ceiling fans. Two gyms to the side have plenty of space and new equipment, but the most exquisite facility of all is the spa. Guest rooms are fine and exactly what you'd want for the price. Other hotel facilities include outdoor and indoor Jacuzzis, sauna, and steam room.
A new tourist-class hotel, this modest place run by an Australian chain occupies a block of prewar shophouses along busy Bras Basah Road between Orchard Road and Raffles City. Everything here is very scaled down, from the rear entrance that looks like a service entrance, to the small lobby, to the plain but tidy guest rooms. Standard category rooms are small compared to others in the city, but deluxe and premier rooms are larger. Mediterranean touches, royal colors, and high ceilings are standard throughout, but only higher priced category rooms have in-room broadband Internet access. Or, to save a dime, you can use the inexpensive Internet cafe off the lobby courtyard. Unless you can get a great discount, you can find better accommodations for the money.
