Outside of Malacca is the 202 hectares (500 acres) of forest that make up Ayer Keroh Recreational Forest, where many attractions have been built. A taxi from Malacca will run you about RM20 (US$5.25). See the Reptile Park (06/231-)136), admission RM4 (US$1.05) adults, RM2 (US554) children, open daily 9am to 6pm; the Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary (06/232-0033), admission RM5 (US$1.30) adults, RM,3 (US80~) children, open daily 8:30am to 5:30pm; the Malacca Zoo (06/232-4053), admission RM3 (US80v) adults, RM 1 (US250 children, open daily 9am to 6pm; and the Taman Mini Malaysia/Mini ASEAN (606/231-6087), admission RM5 (US$1.30) adults, RM2 (US550 children, open 9am to 5pm daily.

Antique hunting has been a major drawn) Malacca for decades. Distinct Peranakan and teak furniture, porcelain, and household items fetch quite a price these days, due to a steady increase in demand for these rare treasures. The area down and around Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lok called Jonker Walk, sports many little antiques shops that are filled with its many gorgeous items as any local museum. Whether you're buying or just looking, it's a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Modern shopping malls are sprouting up in Malacca, the biggest being the Mahkota Parade on Jalan Merdeka, just south of the field (Warrior Square) in the historic district. Two hundred retail stores sell everything from all to clothing.

For crafts, start at Karyaneka (06/284-3270) on Jalan Laksantana close to the Town Square. If you travel down Laksamana you'll find all sorts of small crafts and souvenir shops.
