BY PLANE Penang International Airport (04/643-0811) has direct flights from Singapore about seven times daily (Singapore Airlines toll-free in Singapore 1800/223-8888; Malaysia Airlines 65/336-6777). From KL, Malaysia Airlines has two flights daily (1300/88-3000). The airport is 20km (12 miles) from the city. To get into town, you must purchase fixed-rate coupons for taxis (RM23/US$G.05 to Georgetown; RM35/US$9.20 to Batu Feringgi). There's also the Penang Yellow Bus Company bus no. 83, which will take you to Weld Quay in Georgetown.
There are also car rentals at the airport. Talk to Hertz (04/643-0208) or Budget ( 04/643-6025).
BY TRAIN By rail, the trip from KL to Butterworth takes 6 hours and costs RM5`) (US$15) first-class passage, RM25.40 (US$6.70) for second class, and RM14 (US$3.80) for third class. Three trains leave daily. Call KL Sentral (03/2730-2000) for schedule information.
The train will let you off at the Butterworth Railway Station (04/3237962), on Jalan Bagan Dalam (near the ferry terminal) in Butterworth, on the Malaysian mainland. From there, you can take a taxi to the island or head for the ferry close by.
BY BUS Many buses will bring you only to Butterworth, so if you want the trip to take you all the way onto the island, make sure you buy a ticket that specifically says Penang. These buses will let you out at KOMTAR on Jalan Gladstone across from the Shangri-La Hotel. If you're dropped in Butterworth at the bus terminal on Jalan Bagan Dalam (next to the ferry terminal), you'll need to grab a taxi or take the ferry to the island.
In KL, Plusliner/NICE (03/2722-2760) departs from the KL Train Station regularly. The NICE Executive Express coaches leave six times daily, costing RM50 (US$13). The trip takes about 4 ½ hours.
For buses back to KL call their counter at the Garden Inn Hotel, 41 Jalan Ansor , 04/227-7370.
