Batu Muang Fishing Village If you'd like to see a local fishing village, here's a good one. This village is special for its shrine to Admiral Cheng Ho, the early Chinese sea adventurer. Southeast tip of Penang. No central phone. Botanical Gardens Covering 30 hectares (70 acres) of landscaped grounds, ns botanical garden was established by the British in 1884, with grounds that u perfect for a shady walk and a ton of fun if you love monkeys. They're crawling all over the place and will think nothing of stepping forward for a peanut which you can buy beneath the DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS sign). Also in the gardens is a jogging track and kiddie park. About a 5- or 10-min. drive west of Georgetown. 041228-6248. Free admission. Daily 7am-7pm.

Penang Bird Park The Bird Park is not on Penang Island, but on the mainland part of Penang state. The 2-hectare (5-acre) park is home to some 200 bird species from Malaysia and around the world. Jalan Teluk, Seberang Jaya. 041399-1899. Admission RM5 (US$1.30) adult, RMZ (US554) child. Daily 9am-7pm.

Penang Butterfly Farm The Penang Butterfly Farm, located toward the northwest corner of the island, is the largest in the world. On its 0.8-hectare (2-acre) landscaped grounds there are more than 4,000 flying butterflies from 120 species. At l0am and 3pm there are informative butterfly shows. Don't forget the insect exhibit-there are about 2,000 or so bugs. Jalan Teluk Bahang. 041881-1253. Admission RM5 (US$1.30) adult, RM2 (US554) child over 5; free for children under 4.
