Out at Batu Feringgi, the main road turns into a fun night bazaar every evening just at dark. During the day, there are also some good shops for batik and souvenirs. Clubs in Penang stay open a little later than in the rest of Malaysia, and some even stay open until 3am on the weekends. If you're looking for a bar that's a little out of the ordinary, visit 20 Leith Street, 11-A Lebuh Leith (04/261-8873). Located in an old 1930s house, the place has seating areas fitted with traditional antique furniture in each room of the house.

Possibly the most notorious bar in Penang is the Hong Kong Bar, Lebuh Chulia 4 04/261-9796), which opened in 1920 and was a regular hangout for military personnel based in Butterworth. It has an extraordinary archive of photos of the servicemen who have patronized the place throughout years, plus a collection of medals, plaques, and buoys from ships.

For dancing, the resorts in Batu Feringgi have the better discos. Zulu's Sea side Paradise, Paradise Tanjung Bungah ( 04/890-8808), is a world-beat dance club, spinning African, reggae, and other danceable international music. I lard Life Caf6, 363 Lebuh Chulia (04/262-1740), is an interesting alter hangout. Decorated with Rastafarian paraphernalia, the place fills up with backpackers, who sometimes aren't as laid-back as Mr. Marley would hope they'd be style, its fun to check out the stuff where guests comment on their favorite (or least favorite) travel haunts in Southeast Asia.
