Bugis Street/Bugis Junction If you happened to visit Singapore in the seventies, and remember Bugis as a haven for transvestites and sex shows, you're in for a big surprise: Bugis Street ain't what it used to be. In place of the decadence is a giant shopping mall, Parco Bugis Junction. There's also a night market with a few bargains on cheap chic, curio items, accessories, and video disks.
The area around Bugis Street has a more benign history. The Bugis, fierce and respected warriors, were some of the first people to settle on Singapore in its early years. Raffles took note of their boat-building skills and, as part of his master town plan, included Bugis Town to attract more of them to the island.
Bugis MRT stop, across from Parco Bugis Junction shopping mall.
