SINGAPORE ISLAND
In the 1880s, Sentosa, then known as Pulau Blakang Mati, was a hub of British military activiry, with hilltop forts built to protect the harbor from sea invasion from all sides. Today, it has become a weekend getaway spot and Singapore's answer to Disneyland all rolled into one. You'll find a lot of people recommending Sentosa as a must-see on your vacation, and while some travelers do visit the island for some part of their trip, it might not be the best way to spend your time if you're only in town for a few days. Basically, for those who like to do hard-core cultural and historical-immersion vacations, Sentosa will seem too contrived and cartoonish.
If you're spending the day, there are numerous restaurants and a couple of food courts. For overnights, the Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort and the Beaufort Sentosa, Singapore (see singapore & malaysia websection 3), are popular hotel options. For general Sentosa inquiries, call ,1800/73G-8G72.
Private cars are not allowed entry to the island except between the hours of 6:30pm and 3am, but there are more than a few other ways to get to Sentosa. The cable car and ferry fares are exclusive of Sentosa admission charges, which you are required to pay upon arrival; bus fares include your admission charge. Island admission is S$G (US$3.45) for adults and S$4 (US$2.30) for children. Tickets can be purchased at the following booths: Mount Faber Cable Car Station, World Trade Centre Ferry Departure Hall, Cable Car Towers (next to the World Trade Centre), Cable (at Plaza (on Sentosa), Sentosa Information Booth 4 (at the start of the causeway, opposite Kentucky Fried Chicken), and at Sentosa Information Booth 3 (at the end of the causeway bridge, upon entering Sentosa). Many attractions require purchase of additional tickets, which you can get at the entrance of each.
