Most disabilities shouldn't stop anyone from traveling. There are more options and resources out there than ever before.
There's a handy free guide called The Access Singapore Physically Disabled Person's Guide to Accessible Places, put together by the Singapore Council of Social Services, with charts to rate accessibility features of hotels, airports, places of interest, shops, and public buildings.
Most hotels have accessible rooms, and some cab companies offer special van services. I've found most of the newer buildings are constructed with access ramps for wheelchairs, but older buildings are very problematic, especially the shophouses, with narrow sidewalks and many uneven steps.
In a highly publicized December 11, 1998, interview on CNN, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew was asked by an anonymous caller about the future of gays in Singapore. The senior minister responded, "Well, it's not a matter which I can decide or any government can decide. It's a question of what a society considers acceptable. And as you know, Singaporeans are by and large a very conservative, orthodox society ... I would say, completely different from ... the United Sates and 1 don't think an aggressive gay rights movement would help. But what we are doing as a government is to leave people to live their own lives as long as they don't impinge on other people. I mean, we don't harass anybody." Naturally, the conservative government doesn't support such alternative lifestyles; however, gay and lesbian culture is alive and well in Singapore. What you'll find is that older gays and lesbians are more conservative and therefore less open to discussion, while the younger generations have very few qualms about describing the local scene and their personal experiences as gay men or lesbians in Singapore.
There are tons of websites on the Internet for gays and lesbians in Singapore. Start at an extremely comprehensive "insider" collection of current events, meeting places, travel tips, topical Web discussions, and links to resources. singapore & malaysia websection 7 lists some gay and lesbian clubs and karaoke lounges that are all nice places with friendly folks.
