SPECIAL NEEDS 4
If you're planning to travel outside the U.S., you'd be wise to arm yourself with an international student ID card, which offers substantial savings on rail passes, plane tickets, and entrance fees. It also provides you with basic health and life insurance and a 24-hour help line. The card is available for $22 from the Council on International Educational Exchange, or CIEE. The CIEE's travel branch, Council Travel Service (t 800/22G-8G24), is the biggest student travel agency in the world. If you're no longer a student but are still under 26, you can get a GO 25 card from the same people, which entitles you to insurance and some discounts (but not on museum admissions).
Businesspeople, Singapore is your town. Every hotel has special accommodations for business travelers, which can include nicer rooms; higher floors; extras such as newspapers, shoe shines, and suit pressings; and club lounges where you can have a free breakfast and evening cocktails while you watch CNN or work on one of the hotel's PCs.
Most multinational corporations have accounts with major hotel chains, so your firm may tell you where to stay. If you make your arrangements on your own, though, remember that every hotel has a corporate rate, which is sometimes up to 40% off the going room rate.
Refer to "Etiquette & Customs," later in this singapore & malaysia websection, before your first meeting, so you know how to greet people and trade business cards in the appropriate style.
