SPORTS &THE OUTDOORS
In addition to its cities and towns, iohor also has some beautiful nature to take in, which is doubly good if you have only a short time to see Malaysia and can't afford to travel north to sonic of the larger national parks.
Johor Endau Rompin National Park is about 488 sq. km (293 sq. miles) of lowland forest. There's jungle trekking through 26km (16 miles) of trails and over rivers to see diverse tropical plant species, colorful birds, and wild animals. Unfortunately, you'll have to be a camper to really enjoy the park, as this is the only accommodation you'll get. Still, for those who love the great outdoors, first contact the National Parks (Johor) Corporation, JKR 475, Bukit fimbalan, Johor Bahru (40 07/223-7471), for entry permission. You'll have to take an outstation taxi from Johor Bahru (cost: RM60/US$16); for booking, call 07/ 223-4494 to Kluang. The taxi driver will drop you at the shuttle to the park entrance.
Take this shuttle (which you'll need to prearrange through the National Parks Board) to the park entrance at Kahang. The 3-hour trip costs RM350 (US$92) for two people, then you'll have to pay the RM20 (US$5.25) per-person entrance fee to the park. They can rent you all the gear you'll need, but you must bring your own food, and remember to boil your drinking water at least 10 minutes to get it into a potable condition.
The Waterfalls at Lombong, near Kota Tinggi, measuring about 34m (112 ft.) high, are about 56km (34 miles) northeast of Johor Bahru. You can cool off in the pools below the falls and enjoy the area's chalets, camping facilities, restaurant, and food stalls. An outstation taxi will also take you to the falls, which are a little off the track on your way east to Desaru. The cost would also be around RM60 (US$1G). Johor is a favorite destination for golf enthusiasts. The Royal Johor Country Club and Pulai Springs Country Club are just outside Johor Bahru and offer a range of country club facilities, while other courses require a bit more traveling time, but offer resort-style accommodations. One note of caution: If you play in Johor, especially at the Royal Johor Country Club, don't wear yellow. It is the official color of the sultan, and is worn only bv him when he visits the courses.
