TERENGGANU MARINE PARK 2

The Perhentian islands (two islands, one big, one small) are part of this same archipelago within the Terengganu Marine Park. Located to the north of Redang, they are easier accessed via Kota Bharu in Kelantan. It's about a 45minute ride to the jetty from Kota Bharu airport-you can take a taxi easily.

There are many bungalow operators on these islands-some of these places are terrible, shoddy huts with poor excuses for beds and scarcely anything else. But the worst part is the piles of garbage that accumulate. One place I saw had a stinking garbage heap knee high at the foot of the path that lead from the beach to reception. For some reason these small bungalow operators have not realized that if they turn their own beaches into compost heaps, people will stop coming.

Perhentian Island Resort is your best option here. They have a private beach and are managed properly. '('heir 106 rooms, housed in cabanas offer comfortable beds in air-conditioning. Their one restaurant serves buffet meals three times daily. Activities are organized through their PADI drive center, plus there's snorkeling, tennis, trekking and non-motorized sea sports. They will arrange your speedboat transfers to and from the jetty.

Note: The resort is closed during the rainy season from December through January. Contact Perhentian Island Resort at , O10/903-0100, fax O10/9030106 (these are mobile numbers), It may be more practical to make your arrangements from their KL sales office at 3/2448530, fax 03/243-4984.
