THE BAR
Singaporeans love to go out at night, whether it's to lounge around in a cozy wine bar or to jump around on a dance floor until 3am. And this city has become pretty eclectic in its entertainment choices, so you'll find everything from live jazz to Elvis, from garage rock to techno, world beat, or just plain rock. The truth is, the nightlife is happening. Local celebrities and the young, wealthy, and beautiful are the heroes of the scene, and their quest for the "coolest" spot keeps the club scene on its toes. The listings here are keyed in to help you find the latest or most interesting place. A tip: At press time, the most happening j, and clubs were anything on Mohamed Sultan Road and the new Chinese1, Lan Kwai Fong. Start from there.
Anywhere Music Pub This perennial favorite has weathered fashion trends -1 the economic crisis to become one of the oldest and most established bars the city. Resident band Tania plays pop and rock covers to packed crowds monday through Saturday. It's a casual joint, come as you are, and a mixed vvd of mostly 30s and up, locals and foreign expatriates. Hours are ~iii- Thurs Cpm-2am; Fri-Sat Opm-3am. Happy hours held on weekdays 6-9pm. 19 Tanglin Rd. #04-08/08, Tanglin Shopping Centre. , 65/6734-8233.
Brix In the basement of the Grand Hyatt Regency, Brix has inherited the spot irc reserved for Brannigan's, a rowdy upmarket watering hole and pickup Mnt. Grand Hyatt decided to clean up its act, and had Brix move in instead. Decidedly more sophisticated than its predecessor, Brix has a new air of class, n somehow lacks a certain seedy spontaneity. Still, it's a nice new place on the ~ lie for those who prefer a more discriminating kind of fun. The Music Bar features live jazz and R&B, while the Wine & Whiskey Bar serves up a fine lection of wines, Scotch, and cognacs. Hours are Sun-Thurs 7pm-2am; fry-Sat 7pm-3am and there is a nightly happy hour from 7-9pm. Basement, ,rand Hyatt Singapore, 10-12 Scotts Rd. 65/6416-7108. Carnegies Carnegies Rocks. Here's the place where you'll hear rowdy old favorites to make to room shake from dancing and roar with singing, everything i~)m the latest hot pop songs to cheesy old Grease medleys, disco and drinking favorites. Time was, the rowdier girls would jump up on the bar to dance 1mluding yours truly), but a recent controverisal law banning bartop dancing n the city has put a damper on that (at least for now). It's a great time, but it's Iw a notorious "ang moh" place, ang moh being Hokkien for Westerners, so I()i't count on rubbing elbows with too many locals here. On busy nights somelilies the doorman will charge 10 bucks to let you jump the queue). Hours are ,(ill-Thurs Ham-2am; Fri-Sat llam-3am. There is a happy hour daily i I am-)pm and a crazy hour 6-7pm except Sat and Sun. 44-45 Pekin St., #01-01 Far vst Sq. 65/6534-0850.
