THE BAR 3

IndoChine Richly atmospheric, with graceful Southeast Asian decor, this fashionable lounge drips with exotic charm. Seating areas feel almost like cushiony opium dens, with low benches piled with pillows surrounding small candlelit tables. Music is moody and not too loud to talk over. This is a good place to start exploring all the watering holes along Club Street, and there are a few, all of them pretty hip. 49 Club St. 65/6323-0503.

JJ Mahoney If you're looking for a real bar-type bar, JJ Mahoney comes pretty close. You have the tile floor, the dark wood bar and paneling, stools lining the sides, and everyday people sidling up for another round. The first floor is a nice place to hang out and meet people (until about 10:30pm, when the band kicks in with contemporary but rather loud music), and will broadcast soccer games from time to time. The second floor, up a wide hardwood staircase, has small tables where you can order drinks and play games like Scrabble, Yahtzee, chess, and checkers. The third floor is reserved for KTV, a karaoke lounge where you can sing without worrying about con-women hitting you up for overpriced and watered-down drinks. Hours are Sun-Thurs 5pm-lam; Fri-Sat and the eve of public holidays 5pm-2am. Happy hour is held nightly 5-8pm. 58 Duxton Rd. 65/6225-6225.

The Long Bar Here's a nice little gem of a bar, even if it is touristy and expensive. With tiled mosaic floors, large shuttered windows, electric fans, and punkah fans moving in waves above, Raffles Hotel has tried to retain much of the charm of yesteryear, so you can enjoy a Singapore Sling in its birthplace and take yourself back to when history was made. And truly, the thrill at the Long Bar is tossing back one of these sweet juicy drinks while pondering the Singapore adventures of all the famous actors, writers, and artists who came through here in the first decades of the 20th century. If you're not inspired by the poetry of the moment, stick around and get juiced for the pop/reggae band at 9pm, which is quite good. Hours are Sun=Fhurs llam-lam; Fri-Sat llam-2am. Happy hour nightly 6-9pm, with special deals on pitchers of beer and some mixed drinks. A Singapore Sling is S$18.30 (US$ 10), and a Sling with souvenir glass costs S$28 (US$16). Raffles Hotel Arcade, Raffles Hotel, 1 Beach Rd. 65/63371886.
