THE CLIMATE

The sea on three sides, it's a sure bet that Singapore will be hot and humid year-round. Temperatures remain uniform, with a daily average of 81°F (27°C), afternoon temperatures reaching as high as 87°F (31°C), and an average sunrise temperature as low as 75.03°F (23.9°C). Relative humidity often exceeds 90% at night and in the early morning. Even on a "dry" afternoon, don't expect it to drop much below GO%. (The daily average is 84°relative humidity.) Rain falls year around, much of it coming down in sudden downpours that end abruptly and are followed immediately by the sun.
The Northeast Monsoon occurs between December and March, when temperatures are slightly cooler, relatively speaking, than other times of the year. The heaviest rainfall occurs between November and January, with daily showers that sometimes last for long periods of time; at other times, it comes down in short heavy gusts and goes quickly away. Wind speeds are rarely anything more than light. The Southwest Monsoon falls between June and September. Temperatures are higher and, interestingly, it's during this time of year that Singapore gets the least rain (with the very least reported in July).

In between monsoons, thunderstorms are frequent. Also interesting, the number of daylight hours and number of nighttime hours remains almost constant year-round. February is the sunniest month, while December is generally more overcast.

There are 11 official public holidays: New Year's Day, Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year (2 days), Hari Raya Puasa, Good Friday, Hari Raya Haji, Labour Day Vesak Day, National Day Deepavali, and Christmas Day. On these days, expect government offices, banks, and some shops to be closed.
Holidays and festivals are well publicized by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), which loves to introduce the world to the joys of all Singapore's cultures. As with any schedule of upcoming events, the following information is subject to change; always confirm the details before you plan you trip around an event. A call or visit to an STB office either before your trip or once you arrive will let
you know the what, where, and when of all that's happening during your stay. See the listing of STB offices in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia under "Visitor Information," earlier in this singapore & malaysia websection. Its also has information about upcoming holidays and festivals.
