THE CURENCY 3
ATMs are linked to a network that most likely includes your bank at home. Cirrus ( CCJ 800/424-7787; www.mastercard.com) and PLUS (CJC 800/843-7587; www.visa.com) are the two most popular networks in the U.S.; call or check online for ATM locations at your destination. Be surc you know your four-digit PIN before you leave home and be sure to find out your daily withdrawal limit before you depart. You can also get cash advances on your credit card at an ATM. Keep in mind that credit card companies try to protect themselves from theft by limiting the funds someone can withdraw away from home. It's therefore best to call your credit card company before you leave and let them know where you're going and how much you plan to spend. You'll get the best exchange rate if you withdraw money from an ATM, but keep in mind that many banks impose a fee every time a card is used at an ATM inS$ US$a different city or bank. On top of this, the bank from which you withdraw cash may charge its own fee.
Singapore has thousands of conveniently located 24-hour ATMs. Whether you're in your hotel, a shopping mall, or a suburban neighborhood, I'd be surprised if you're more than 1 or 2 blocks from an ATM-ask your concierge or any passerby and they can direct you. With debit cards on the MasterCard/Cirrus or Visa/ PLUS systems, you can withdraw Singapore currency from any of these machines, and your bank will deduct the amount from your account at that day's official exchange rate. This is a very good way to access cash for the most favorable currency rate, but make sure you check with your bank before you leave home, to find out what your daily withdrawal limits are. It's also a good idea to keep track of ATM charges-your home financial institution can levy a fee of up to US$1.50 per transaction for this
convenience, and rumor has it Singapore banks will be charging a fee as well.
