THE EAST COAST 2

It almost any given time there are fewer locals than tourists here, most of whom come from Singapore and other parts of Malaysia. Most come for the scuba and beaches. In fact, many dive website claim the best scuba is to the north Redang and Perhentian Islands (which are not as easy to get to as Tioman), vt to be honest, I have many friends who have taken dive trips all over South1o Asia, and claim that Tioman is the same, if not better, than sister sites to the east. Don't plan your trip from November through February. Monsoon tides that Tioman inaccessible by ferry, and not the most perfect vacation in the tropics.
Despite the tourist traffic, Tioman has retained much of its tropical island '11 M, perhaps by virtue of the fact that only one resort has been built on it. Kampung Tekek, which is the village where you arrive by either sea or air, has the only paved road on the island connecting it with Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort (the only resort on Tioman). This area is more built up than the rest of' the island-built up is really a relative term; trust me, it's a one-horse town.
Activity is spread throughout the kampungs (villages), which spring up in the various bays of the island. Besides Tekek, the main ones are Kampung Air Batang, aka ABC, and Kampung Salang. Each kampung has some sort of accommodation facilities, most of them very, very basic wooden chalets, with some access to canteens or restaurants.
