BY PLANE Flights to Tioman originate from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, operated by a private airline, Berjaya Air, and coordinated by the folks at the Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort. However, you need not stay at the resort to book passage on these flights. When considering travel to Tioman, keep in mind the monsoon. Berjaya Air does operate a daily flight during low season, but many times flights are cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. During the lovely months of March through October, Berjaya flies twice daily. Call their KL office for reservations at 03/746-8228. Their office in Tioman is at the Berjaya Resort (09/419-1000). The airport in Tioman is in Kampung Tekek, just across from the main jetty. If you're staying at Berjaya Tioman, a shuttle will fetch you; however, if you plan to stay elsewhere, you're on your own. BY BUS SPM Ekspress operates daily bus service from KL’s Puduraya Bus Terminal to Mersing, which is the mainland hopping off point to the island (03/202-5255 in KL). From Johor Bharu take Johora Express from the Larkin Terminal (07/224-8280). They have a daily bus costing RM7 (US$1.85) for the trip. All buses arrive at and depart from the R&R Plaza, which is just next to the jetty where you'll find speedboats to Tioman.

BY FERRY Ten speedboats depart from Mersing each day. Book passage from the many agents huddled around the dock near Mersing's R&R Plaza. They're basically all the same, each reserving trips on the same boats. Boats leave Mersing Jetty at intervals that depend on the tide. The trip takes around 1'12 hours and can cost between RM20 and RM25 (US$5.25-US$6.60), depending on the power of the boat you hire. Boats drop you at either the Berjaya Resort or at the main jetty in Kampung Tekek. The last boat leaves for Tioman between 5 and 6pm every evening. If you miss this boat, you're stuck in Mersing for the night.
