THE KAMPUNGS

Each kampung (with the exception of Juara) has, in addition to bungalow accommodations, some sort of eating arrangements, and a PADI dive center that organizes scuba trips as well as snorkel outings. These companies are all internationally accredited with excellent dive masters on band.

Kampung Tekek is the center of life on Tioman, which means it's the busiest spot, and while there are small accommodations here-as well as some convenience stores (7am-11pm), souvenir shops, and restaurants-you're better off in one of the other kampungs. The best dining is to the side of the main jetty, where you'll find open-air seafood stalls selling soups, noodle dishes, and seafood al vegetable dishes, at very inexpensive prices.

Kampung ABC lines a long rocky beach that is not the best for swimming in sport, but ABC is very laid-back and comfortable in other ways. Chalets line the pathway along the beach, where you'll find small shady picnic areas and hammocks to swing in. While ABC is well populated by travelers, the people here and to be more relaxed.

The nicest place to stay is Air Batang Beach Cabanas, Kampung Air Batang, 86800 Mersing (no phone). Creeping up the side of the hill, these chalets, many irh views of the sea, are the largest and newest in the kampung. Rates go from 1120 (US$32) for units with air-conditioning and RM70 (US$ I 8) for those u hour. All cabins have private toilets with cold shower. Cash is accepted, but n credit cards or traveler's checks. Really the only place to eat here is Nazri's Place in the south end of the beach, which serves breakfast, lunch, and fish or chicken barbecue dinner daily.
