WHERE TO STAY 4
Let's talk money. Rates for double rooms range from as low as S$95 (US$54) at the Strand on Bencoolen (a famous backpacker's strip) to as high as S$650 (US$371) a night at the exclusive Raffles Hotel. Average rooms are usually in the S$300 (US$171) range, but keep in mind that although all prices listed in this book are the going rates, they rarely represent what you'll actually pay. In fact, you should never have to pay the advertised rate in a Singapore hotel, as many offer promotional rates. When you call for your reservation, always ask what special deals they are running and how you can get the lowest price for your room. Many times hotels that have just completed renovations offer discounts, and most have special weekend or long-term stay programs. Also be sure to inquire about free add-ons. Complimentary breakfast and other services can have added value that makes a difference in the end.
All rates listed are in Singapore dollars, with U.S. dollar equivalents provided as well (remember to check the exchange rate when you're planning, though, since it may fluctuate). Most rates do not include the so-called "+++" taxes and charges: the 10% service charge, 5% goods and services tax (GST), and 1% cess (a 1% tax levied by the STB on all tourism-related activities). Keep these in mind when figuring your budget. Some budget hotels will quote discount rates inclusive of all taxes.
